Wood Siding
What is wood siding
Wood siding is milled boards cut into a variety of styles. The most popular breeds are cedar and redwood, as they resist mold and rot. Horizontal wood siding styles include clapboard, beveled, and tongue and groove. There are also vertical wood siding styles, such as board and batten and plywood. Some even come in sections up to four feet wide which impersonate the look of individual boards. Wood siding can also include cedar shingle siding which is discussed in it own category here.
Both vertical wood siding and horizontal wood siding are nailed to an exterior wall. Your siding will interlock into one another or will need to be nailed to strips across wall studs.
Advantages of wood siding
Wood siding provides that classic look for your home that was very prominent before vinyl siding and other relatively new siding materials were created. Vertical wood siding in a board and batten style can recreate the barn look.
Most wood siding wood siding can last at least 30 years.
Disadvantages of wood siding
Wood siding can burn and is susceptible to cracking and splitting.
Protective stain must be applied approximately every four years. If painted, this must be reapplied approximatley every five years.
Cost of wood siding
Costs can vary greatly depending on style chosen. Average prices can range from $200 - $600 per square (100 square feet) plus the cost of trim, accessories, and installation.
